I enjoy reviewing and try to be as honest as possible. I look for specific things such as technical merit, flow and lyrical quality in poems, creativity, tone, and mood. Though I can be a tough critic, I strive to encourage writers to grow and challenge themselves. I feel that it is through constructive criticism that we grow as writers. I strive to give the writer feedback on the overall impact of the piece. I am the host and judge of the "Shadows and Light Poetry Contest" and co-host of the "Roots & Wings Contest"
I always add both positive and constructive comments to all of my reviews. I'm fast and thorough, and I fulfill any and all specifications in the review request. I'm willing to review ANYTHING without a bias, or judgements on the nature of a piece of work.
Please send me an email to my offsite email as well as sending a request because I forget to check here as often. I will get to your request if you send me an offsite email at jayfeather1998@gmail.com. If you contact me with a reminder that you sent me a request I'll get right on it!!!
My review style is personal, structured, and emotionally driven. I aim to balance honest praise with thoughtful, constructive critique, always offering suggestions that help strengthen the work. I try to keep my tone respectful and supportive because I believe feedback should encourage, not discourage. My goal is to help writers grow, not just improve one piece.
Please do not ask me to review your item if you do not want an honest response. I tend to be blunt, but if I can't say anything nice or don't understand your piece, I won't review it. I believe in the peanut butter sardine sandwich approach to critiquing work...something good, something bad, more good.
Casual, friendly. I'll point out typos when I see them and make suggestions about quality, characters and logic, besides telling you how I feel about the piece.
Brutally honest, but fair. I will give my impressions of the main points: Plot, character, setting, dialog.
Then I will get into grammar, spelling, and typos.
I will tell you what works, and what doesn't.
As far as the star ratings go, I don't rely on them too much, but use them as a measure of an item's relative merit. Take it for what it's worth. Bottom line, my goal is to help the author improve their work.
I'm a casual reader. Did I enjoy the reading experience? Would I read more? I will highlight what I did and/or didn't enjoy. I do not edit grammar or spelling, but I might comment on it.
I'm more interested in the flow and style of a story. Does it read well, am I hooked on the story and the characters? My grammar and spelling are good, but I'm by no means an expert however, I can see some things that might get missed. I've been there, written something up and missed stupid little things.
In a single word, thorough. I will turn your piece upside down, shake the change out of its pockets and look at even the most minute details. I can be technical but will do so when emphasizing a larger point about the piece as a whole.
Not sure I have a style....I learn as much from you as you from me. I will point our typos, grammatical things if I see them. I love poetry and when it comes to stories, please nothing "dark"....not my thing.
I dissect stories like a surgeon with a poet’s hands—probing the emotional marrow, not just the bones. My reviews prioritize thematic resonance, psychological authenticity, and prose that feels before it explains. I’ll ask why the rain in your story smells like regret, or how the silence between lovers becomes its own character. Technical critiques (pacing, grammar) come only if requested—I’m here to unravel why your story haunts, not just how it functions.
Minimalist. Focus on technical. I also look at how a work would fit into the traditional publishing landscape. I don't use a template.
Warning: I am Australian, and so cultural differences may apply.
I've spent hours upon hours upon hours editing my own work and others. I tend to review in that same mode with the goal of offering suggestions and possible improvements. I give positives/negatives and details.
As a reviewer of your work, I will first look for identification in what you are presenting. When a reader can truly identify with the writer, emotion sets in and the story becomes a part of the reader as well as the writer.
I try to be honest and positive. My Christian faith is an important background factor. I hate rating low but have a system that determines how I grade.
I'm honest but constructive. I'll explain why I give the number of stars I give and what you could do to improve that. I do fix grammar as well as look at style, emotional triggers, characters, and other things like that. I'll get back to you with a full review in a couple of days or so after the request, depending on the length of the item.
